Clothes & Mat

You already have the best clothes for yoga, clothes that feel good and feel good as you move. Try what you’d wear doing housework, for example an old t-shirt and loose shorts work well. Keeping it simple helps you enjoy.

Mat

You already have the best mat for yoga. Folded blankets are soft and cozy and work great as a yoga mat. You don’t want a nonslip mat.

Do standing poses barefoot or in socks on the floor. If you begin to feel a foot slip, back off enough to not slip and hold the pose. The feeling helps adjust the pose precisely for yourself and learn it well and progress.

Stability first. Yoga holds to do no harm, and to avoid harm, and to grow well, we want to develop stability, skill, and strength before we work on flexibility. Grounding through the pose is part of the invisible good part of the pose.

Don’t rush. Don’t push. Learn fundamentals and build up. Give yourself kindness and patience like you are teaching a child you love very much. See how a child thrives with good teaching, so too look forward in your imagination and see yourself thrive with good teaching. Hope and enjoying and kindness and patience are some of the ingredients in the not-so-secret sauce that helps it work well.
